WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT MY FIRST APPOINTMENT?

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and it’s completely normal to feel a little nervous. Your first appointment is an opportunity to get to know your therapist, ask questions, and begin exploring what has brought you to counselling.

  • When you arrive, you can make yourself comfortable in our waiting area, and your therapist will greet you at your scheduled appointment time. They will begin by showing you around the space, introducing you to their office, and helping you get settled so you feel as comfortable as possible before getting started.

  • During your first session, your therapist will review important information such as confidentiality, informed consent, and what you can expect from the counselling process. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about therapy, your therapist, or the process moving forward.

  • Much of the first appointment is focused on getting to know you. Your therapist will ask about your background, current concerns, relationships, overall well-being, and what has led you to seek support. Together, you’ll discuss your goals for therapy and what you hope to gain from the counselling process so you can begin developing a plan that fits your needs.

  • Every therapist works a little differently, but our approach is always collaborative. We want you to feel involved in your care and empowered to move at a pace that feels right for you. There is no expectation to share everything during your first session, and you are always welcome to take your time.

  • Depending on your needs and your therapist’s approach, your first session may include conversation, activities, or other ways of helping you feel comfortable and building connection. Because the first appointment often focuses on getting to know you, it can involve more talking than future sessions. You’re always welcome to bring a water bottle, snack, fidget, or another comfort item if that helps you feel more at ease.

  • At the end of the session, your therapist will check in about how the appointment felt, answer any remaining questions, discuss next steps, and, if appropriate, schedule another appointment. Depending on your goals, they may also suggest something to reflect on or practice between sessions.

Our goal is for you to leave your first appointment feeling welcomed, heard, and supported, knowing that therapy is a space where you can move forward at your own pace.
